I’m not really sure how to feel about this. The headline is misleading. It isn’t apple that is looking to go into the states, but foxconn. while, yes, I think apple might be their biggest customer, they are not the only.
but… I mean, this might be a good thing. If not for foxconn’s already terrible rep for labour practices. I’m pretty sure that this move is only feasible at this time precisely because the outsourcing of labour has already damaged unions to the extent that if they start this manufacturing in the states, people will be so desparate for jobs, that this will basically become the walmart of manufacturing. Low wages, never quite full time, and little or no benefits.
because… it is pretty clear that the us is getting fucking desperate for jobs. and the two areas they are looking at: detroit and la, are two places (especially detroit) that could really use this influx of manufacturing jobs.
I’m dubious. Very dubious.
i mean, i wouldn’t doubt it if they’re still made with sweatshop labor even in the us. prisons are a money maker, after all.
very good point.
